Challenge 11

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:38 pm by

I think it is so great when people take the time out of their own lives to do volunteer work for others. This is something that is very admirable and also something I would like to do myself. I have put a lot of thought into the type of volunteer work I would like to do. There are so many things that I love that can be translated into doing something I love doing, for free. I have thought about volunteering at a hospital, but then recently decided that I am not good around blood. I then came across a commercial on the radio that was talking about Greenhill Humane Society and how they take volunteers during the summer. I really want to sign up so I can work with the animals. Another this that I would like to do is a program called Safety Town. A friend told me about it and I thought it would be fun because one of my passions in life is working with children. I want to be a elementary school teacher after college.

There are so many opportunities for volunteer work even in your own community. You don’t need to search very far. The thing about volunteer work is that it is for everybody, including yourself. It benefits your community by doing whatever you did to help and it benefits you by making you feel good about yourself for helping out your community.

A True Hero in My Life.

Posted in Uncategorized at 2:26 pm by

I know it’s cheesy, but a true hero in my life would have to be my father. He has been there with me my whole life. He knows what is best for me and I listen to him. He supports me with all the  decisions I have made in my life. If I didn’t have him in my life, I would have no one. He is an inspiration to me through his music and he always pushes me to do my best with mine. He has held my family together for ten years. He is so brave and I look up to him in so many ways. He has done such a great job raising my little brother and I. Being a single parent is hard and being a single dad may be even harder, but he does is it everyday. I deeply admire his courage and he has taught me so many great values. We may not agree on everything, but at the end of the day I will always love him just as I had before. When I get older I hope that I will have some of the great values he has. He is really my hero in life and he couldn’t be a better father to me.

To me, a hero isn’t a superhero that can fly and saves the damsel in distress. A hero is someone that in someway or another, has shaped or changed the life of another. You can choose to stand above everyone and help someone or you can choose to stand in the dark to be the “innocent” bystander. There are heroes in everyone’s life, and when you have one you should most definitely let them know it.

Challenge #8: Shades of Purple

Posted in Uncategorized at 9:07 pm by

To me, color makes the world interesting. If we didn’t have any color, everything would be so bland and dull. Of all the colors, purple is my favorite. It’s just so bright and just looking at the color makes me happy. If you think about it, there is a lot of things that are purple. There is purple food, purple plants, and even purple flowers.

Frogs are one of my favorite animals and this one is purple.

I always knew that calla lilies were my favorite kind of flower. Then I discovered that there was a purple calla lily, so the flower is just so much better now.

I really like elephants and I would much rather see them in their natural habitat than held in captivity. It makes me sad when I see them cramped together. They have the right to live in there own habitat and have the freedom to do what they want.

Earth Day

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:03 pm by

This Earth Day I really won’t be doing anything different because I do stuff to help our environment almost everyday. My family and I recycle almost everything that you possibly can. My father is very passionate about recycling. We also drive very efficient cars. My car gets about 40 miles per gallon. My father’s car gets about 32 miles per gallon. If I can walk to my destination, then I will, assuming that the weather is decent outside. I strongly agree with the idea of hybrid cars. I think it is really important to keep our environment clean because we have to look at it and deal with it everyday. The more dirty and out of shape our environment gets, the more work it is going to be to keep it clean.  One person can make a small difference, but together, the difference could be huge.

As I pulled out of the store parking lot, I was reminded of how careful you have to be when you are a new driver.  I turned my blinker on to take a left turn to get back to my house. When I finally got into the correct lane, my car started making a funny noise and stalling as I pressed the gas pedal.  Suddenly the funny noise that wasn’t so funny anymore stopped.  My car had died.  So with my unprepared yet skillful father in the passenger seat, he automatically knew to switch drivers and he went around the car as fast as he could.  After the hazard lights had been engaged, we got out and started to push the car into the nearest driveway.  When he finally got the car turned on and the engine working properly, we got home as safely as possible.  That will always be my first memory of driving.

Blog #6: Podcasting Thoughts

The podcast that really caught my attention was the book talk on The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.  It really drew me in because of all the components used in the making of the book talk.  There seemed to be music and there was more than one person talking, which makes it seem more realistic.  The quotes from the actual book were a really good touch to give the listener a sense of what the book is going to be about and if they really want to read the book or not.  The people talking made it easy to listen to because of the flow of everything.  The chosen music really went along nice with the theme of the book talk.  The only thing I didn’t like was the main narrator seemed to talk too fast. Otherwise, the whole thing was very well done.
